SHANNON SETS NEW MILE RECORD AT RANDWICK

METROPOLITAN HANDICAPTO CORDALE

A.J.C. SPRING MEETING

Recd. 10.30 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 7. Racing away from his rivals in the George Main Stakes at Randwick to-day. Shannon beat Flight by six lengths and clipped a quarter of a second off the Australasian mile record. Though suffering from a painfully injured leg as a result of a fall a few weeks ago, Darby Munro rode brilliantly to win the plaudits of the crowd. which had demonstrated against him on Saturday for the starter's blunder which cost Shannon th? Epsom Handicap. To-day Flight made the running. bu‘ Shannon stayed handy until the turn, and then drew easily away. He ran the first halfmile in 47sec. and the second in 47-j sec. The favourite, Good Idea, failed in the Metropolitan, finishing third to Cordale and Chaytor. Ridden as usual by Moore, Cordale stayed back in the field and then followed Chaytor through. Chaytor looked likely at the Leger, but Cordale’s finishing burst was too strong.

The Shorts proved a runaway victory for Chaperone, who equalled the Randwick six-furlong record. Gimcrack Stakes (Of £1300; five furlongs) NECHI, 8.5. Thompson 1
