AUSTRALIAN MINERS WANT 35-HOUR WEEK
Recd. 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 3. The miners would now seek a 35hour week, said Mr. G. W. S. Grant, general secretary of the Miners' Federation. This would be in addition to demands for a wage Increase. Mr. Grant explained that the shorter working week, based on a seven-hour day, would be sought as soon as the wage pegging regulations were lifted.
The campaign for £1 weekly increase in wages now involves six of eight unions in the metal trades industry, with about 70,000 members. The New South Wales Trades and Labour Council is expected to endorse the view that there should be a general review of wages and of the method of determining the basic "age.
