VARIEGATED THISTLE OUT OF CONTROL IN WANGAEHU DISTRICT

Variegated thistle was well out of control on most of the larger holdings in the Wangaehu and Otakapu Ridings, stated the Rangitikei CountyCouncil’s noxious weeds inspector, Mr. J. Robinson (Hunterville), reporting at the monthly meeting yesterday on an inspection he had made of these districts.

“The amount of labour employed on most of these properties is inadequate to even keep the weed clear from their boundaries. It is from these nroperties that the weed is being allowed to seed and become a menace to the whole su rounding district,” Mr. Robinson added. “When sodium chlorate has been used with a mixture of lime on this weed good results have been obtained on most, properties, but once the weed attains any size in leaf the sodium method is not so successful. “Because of the exceptionally wet weather during the month work on the eradication of gorse, especially with the use of bulldozers, has been retarded. Most farmers are now concentrating on the trimming of gorse hedges. “Blackberry and most other weeds a e showing rapid signs of growth but where blackberry was sprayed late in the autumn with sodium, very little signs of growth are to be seen," Mr. Robinson stated.
