POREWA CRICKET CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING.

“The dramatic end to the World War just over 12 months ago, was followed by a lather unexpected and spontaneous revival of cricket in Rangitikei," stated the president, Mr. D. A. Cameron in reviewing the past season of the Porewa Cricket Club at the annual meeting this week. “The club soon found itself with an embarrassing number of members and the selector was faced with a difficult probiem in trying to arrange for all members to get their share of cricket, and at the same time to be fair to those prospective representative players who were desperately in need ot match practice after the years of recess,” continued Mr. Cameron.

W’ith the entry of new clubs into the competition this year and other circumstances, several of last season’s regular players would be unavailable, he said.

"The club was successful in winning the Manley Cup, and congratulates the other clubs upon their keenness and enthusiasm, and, above ail, their high standard of sportsmanship—a great feature of Rangitikei cricket,” added Mr. Cameron. Appreciation was due to the foundation members who, as the result of the break with the war years and the influx of young new members, retired from active participation in the game. Messrs A. B. Marshall, M. M. Marshall, R. Baldwin, D. A. Cameron, R. Torrens, J. Arkwright and B. Gray gained representative honours, R. Baldwin capturing the largest number of wickets in rep. matches. The finances of the club were sound, there being a credit balance of £l3 18s.

The election of officers resulted:— President, Mi-. D. A. Cameron; vicepresidents. Messrs H. F. Arkwright, W. E. Simpson, G. G. Oliver, R. P. Sherriff, G. L. Marshall, p. Chapman, A. Fullerton-Smith and Rev. N. Williams; captain, Mr. M. M. Marshall; vice-captain, Mr. A. Fulierton-Smith; auditor, Mr. J. H. C. Broad; delegates to Rangitikei Cricket Association, Messrs D. A. Cameron, M. Marshall, N. Williams and P. Chapman; committee, Messrs A. B. Marshall, M. Marshall and A. Fullerton-Smith; secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. B. Gray. Games are to be arranged against Huntley School (before opening of season) and Wanganui Collegiate School.

BASKETBALL MATCHES AGAINST WANGANUI REVIEWED.

(By “Goalie"), In the fourth grade games last Satruday against Wanganui, Marton players put on a very good show and there is some good material here for next year.

The goalies are not quite sure of themselves, but more certainty will come with experience. Marian Higginson took most of tlte shots, but Etna Armstrong did good field work and threw a beautiful long shot. June Taylor has improved in her field work and had quickened her game. In the centre, Dulcie Morris, Pauline Campbell, and Betty Bailey combined well and played an excellent game. They were quick and sure in both catching and throwing.

In defence Shirley Rivers, Mavis Czespanski. and Shirley Harris had a hard fight, and put up a good stand. Of these three Shirley Harris played her best game of the season and intercepted the ball time and again. It ! was very good play. I The third grade team met with exceedingly strong opposition, but they kept the score down. In the centre Ruth Brown, Zelma Smith, and Ruby Wasson put up a fair fight but they were not strong enough for the opposition. These three players are quick and energetic hut are too light for solid play. Thus the goalies did not get enough chances to do their part. However, Pat Brown, Pat Orgias, and Nancy Adam did excellent work when they got the ball. These three show promise for next season, as they throw with more certainty than the senior goal throwers. In defence Rita Gorrie, Pat Whale, and Doreen Brennand had a hard struggle against superior players. In a couple of years' time they will be just as good. In this third grade team there are some fine young players. Marton performed disappointingly in the A grade game against Wanganui. Time and again the Marton centres secured possession and passed the ball to the goalies, but. the latter failed to “put in in.” Lena Phillips showed herself by far the surer shot, by scoring most of her tries, but. the oilier two were right off their game and missed more than I could count.

In the centre, the play was decidedly good. Margaret Jamieson, Myra Brown, and Lesley Barr combined well. They were quick and reliable

and were equally as good as their opponents,

The defence had to put all their strength forward and they wanted a bit more at the end. as they appeared pretty well exhausted, except for June McDonald, who kept up right till the first whistle blew. Joan Wigglesworth and Shirley Marsh put in very good work also. It was good play you three. In conclusion, I think it has been a good season, considering it has been a re-start after a lapse of four years. The players have shown a good spirit, both on and off the field. So. good luck for next season. AMBULANCE NOTES. (By “First Aid”).

The Nursing Division held their annual re-examination recently, and were examined by Mr. R. L. Penn, who reports that all members who sat for the test were successful in passing, The Nursing Cadets were also examined for further proficiency tests for their Grand Prior Badge, and those who sat for the “History of the Order” passed with high honours, the examiner stating that their work was of a high standard. Teams are still holding regular parades in work for the forthcoming competitions to be held in Wanganui next month, and the teams must be prepared to give as much time as possible to their work. Members of the Ambulance Division are asked to note that all public duties and injuries treated must be handed in to the divisional secretary as soon as possible and any records they wish recorded should also be forwarded.

An endeavour is being made to hold a series of lectures on subjects of interest to members of the two senior divisions as soon as examinations are over, thus completing the year’s work.

The official returns of the Ambulance Division show that members were on duty 104 times during the past season of sport, this is of course ! taken from the duty sheet of the brigade. The only time more than four men were on duty together was at the race meetings when six members were on duty at the one place.
