WILL ADDRESS GARRISON OFFICERS’ CLUB

Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the Soviet in NevZealand, M. Ivan Kernilovich Ziabkin will pay his first visit to Wanganui on September 18, when he will address members of the Garrison Officers’ Club.

M. M. Ziabkin was born in Russia in 1902 and graduated from the ElectroMechanics’ Institute of Leningrad. From 1931 to 1939 he conducted scientific pedagogical work in the higher technical institutes of Leningrad. He worked in the People's Commissariat of Foreign Affairs from 1939 to 1944, holding responsible posts, and he then went to Pretoria, as the Soviet's Con-sul-General in South Africa. He arrived in New Zealand late in November last and formally presented his credentials to the Gov-ernor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, a fortnight later. Since then he has spent most of his time in Wellington.
