COLDER, WETTER AND MORE WINDY
THE “TERRIBLE” AUGUST OF 1946
August, known among farmers as the “terrible August of 1946,” when compared with the corresponding month last year, was extremely unpleasant from a climatical point of view. Last month was colder, wetter and much more windy than August, 1945. The figures for the month, recorded in the city, with last August's statistics in parentheses, are as follows: — Mean temperature: 49.35 deg. (51.4 deg.)
Maximum temperature: 61.2 deg. on August 1 (64.4 deg. Minimum temperature: 27.9 deg. on August 31 (80.5 deg.
Rainfall: 6.20 in. fell on 24 days (2.57 in.
Sunshine: 148 hours (251 hours!. Last month there was an average of only 4.8 hours of sunshine per day, four days in the month being completely without, any sunshine. The brightest day during the month was August 30, when 10 hours were recorded.
Wind: A total of 6351 miles of wind w s experienced, compared with only 3963 miles for August last year.
