WANGANUI HARRIERS
MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONS The Wanganui Harrier Club chumpionsnips we.e conducted on Saturday in showery weather before a large attendance of club supporters. The junior race was a very even contest Between the leaders, although the winner lead from start to finish. He had a slight lead at the end of the first mile ot about 20 yards; at the turn for home he had increased it to about 35 yards, running very strongly, going over the country he maintained his lead and then over the last run on the road increased his lead to about 80 yards, finishing very strongly. This boy, J. Burnett, is oniy in his first year as a harrier and should go a long way to higher honours in championsnips, particularly in West Coast championships on Auzust 3. The runner-up, J. Galvin, ran a well-judged race throughout He was in fifth place in the early stages, but after the turn he ran on steadily, gain ing three places, and sprinted over the latter part to run a good second. W. Weller also ran another good race, proving that he can run the dis tances with ease, and when he is able to develop a better sprint he will be hard to beat. He was never further back than fourth at any stage. He will be a valued member' of any team. The senior race proved veiy exciting and the winner, C. Cox, received a good ovation as he sprinted to the finish in the fast time of 33.3. Going up Springvale Road, Cox and Weller were together, both running very st ongly, and closely followed by a bunch ot three, 11. Hopper. Penbeithj and Harris. Over lhe back country, Cox left Weller and at the turn for home Cox had a lead of about 50 yards on Weller, with Penberthy in third place, and the remainder at short intervals.
At the end of Devon Lane Cox had increased his lead to about 2c*J yards; this he maintained to the finish to breast ihe tape just one minute ahead of Weller. He looks like the new West Coast champion with even a belter time. His effort was more v.orihy, of note in that he ran the whole distance in bare feet. C. Weller, although losing ihe club title to a vounger comoelitoi, ran a j ; nd wifi stilt need to be reckoned with in the centre chamionpships. He still has plenty of stamina in him and < an always be relied upon to run a good race fo. any team. A. Penberthy ran his best race of the season, showing some of hi.-, old prewar form which gained him West Coast team honours. He looks a likely prospect for this year’s team.
