COUNTIES URGED TO SUBMIT PROPOSALS FOR NEW BRIDGES
The importance of county councils submitting proposals bridge renewals was emphasised hy the man, Mr. W. G. Sampscn, M wte annual meeting on Friday, of the No. 8 District Highways Cour. »I. Early application was most desirable and every county should maxe an effort to renew bridges, which required replacing. he said. Mr. W. Morrison, a member of the Main Highways Board, referred to the problem of bridge renewals. The board, ho said, was faced v/ith a huge programme of delayed m. i.Filename and bridge renewals. At present, however, hero was a shoitage of cement, steel j n.l 1. hour. With more men returning to New Zealand, '■’owever, it was expected that the shortage of labour would be overcome, but this was not the case with cement and steel. Replying to a point raised by Mr. W. G. Belton, chairman of the Patea County Council, Mr. Sampson said that though cement and steel were no! available at lhe present time, nobody knew what would hannen three months hence. “It would be a bad policy not to have bridge proposals ready when moment and steel do come to hand,” Mr. Sampson added. “By submitting the proposals ahead, you have a chance of getting the work done.” Mr. Belton said that if there was no possibility of carrying out bridge work the monev would he iied up. whereas it could be used for some other purpose. Mr. Sampson commented that in one country a road could net be used for some tin-"' b«cp>>sn ni - ? bridge.
