CRACKSMEN IN HURRY
DISTURBED Al HORORATA POST OFFICE (P.A.) Christchurch, May 23. Safe-breakers who made an unsuccessful attempt to rob a safe at the Hororata post office in the early hours of this morning were very nearly caught in the act. When a woman telephone exchange assistant arrived for duty at 6 o’clock siie found that a half-circle had been burnt out of the safe round the combination lock, probably with a gas burner similar to the type used by mechanics for welding. The safe was red hot, indicating that the cracksmen had been al work only a few minutes before. Footprints on the floor were still wet and it was drizzling in Hororata al Ihe time It appeared that the cracksmen were interrupted, as they obviously made off in a hurry. They left through the front door, which was wide open when Ihe exchange assistant arrived. Entrance to the post office was gained by forcing open a window at the side of the building. Nobody lives on the premises.
