FIRST N.Z. WELCOME TO FREYBERGS
Recd. 6.10 p.m. Cristobal (Canal Zone) May 21. The first welcome by New Zealanders accorded the GovernorGeneral designate of New Zealand (Lieut.-General Sir Bernard Freyberg) and Lady Freyberg, was in the Panama Canal, when the Buahine passed the Durango, which was bound for Britain and was in the Culebra Cut. Before lunch on Tuesday the Durango’s captain obligingly morsed a message of respect, welcome and good wishes to the on-coming Ruahine, on behalf of the full complement of New Zealand passengers, including the science delegation (Sir Theodore Rigg and Professors Hercus and Soper) and eight members of the Press delegation; also various members of the services, headed by AirCommodore Buckley, and the richlydecorated Squadron-Leader Thiele. All the Durango’s boat-deck was fitted with megaphones and the passengers sang the ‘‘Maori Battalion” song and shouted the general’s name. General Freyberg, from the bridge of the Ruahine, waved his acknowledgments and replied with a cordial Marconigram immediately.
