40-HOUR WEEK
CLAIM OPENED IN £ AUSTRALIA 9 p.m. Melbourne, May 22. y A claim for a 40-hour week, directly backed by 53 unions, was opened today.
Presenting the union’s case, Mr. R. M. Eggleston, on behalf of the Australasian Council of Trade Unions, said it was a primary claim by the workers for better conditions. It represented the strongest demonstration of unity among the workers that had ever been shown in the Arbitration Court. The unions who backed it replesented hundreds of thousands of workers.
For half an hour after the opening of tlie Court, counsel and representatives of industry were still announcing appearances. * The Acting Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Drake Brockman, is presiding, and with him are four other judges. Mr. Eggleston said that for more than six years the workers had shelved the claim. They had been constantly assured that the end of hostilities would mark the dawn of a new era. The case before the Qourt represented the first real test of whether that hope was to be realised.
