58 TO BE HANGED
MAUTHAUSEN OFFICIALS Berlin, May 13. The War Crimes Court at Dachau sentenced to death by hanging 58 former officials of the Mauthausen concentration camp. Three others were sentenced to life imprisonment. All 61 of the accused were found guilty of violation of the laws and usages of war.
After announcing the sentences the Court made a statement, which it agreed upon unanimously, and which was read in English and German. “The Court finds that ihe circumstances and conditions, and they very nature of the Mauthausen concentration camp, combined with any or all of its by-camps.’* it said, “was of such a criminal nature as to cause every official, Governmental, military, civil, and every emoloyee in it, whether a member of the Waffen SS. the Allegemeine SS. or civilian, to be culpably and criminally resoonsible.”
Each of the accused was called from the dock and the sentence read to him. One of the accused, August Eigruber (39), former Gauleiter and Defence Minister of Upper Austria, who was accused of keeping a private concentration camp, turned on his heel and walked out stiffly smilinc scornfully, when he heard the death sentence. Another of the accused collapsed and had to be assisted from the Court.
