Mr. R. H. Neilson, former curatorsecretary of the Dunedin Public Art Callery, was elected a life member of lhe Art Gallery Society at its annual meeting last week. Mr. Leo Wilson, Okoia, who became seriously ill about a week ago. has sitown some improvement. He is an inmate of the Wanganui Public Hospital. Mr. J. H. Gardiner, who has been engineer to the Otago Electric Power Bodtd for the past six years, has been aopcinted engineer to the Golden Bay Fewer Board, Nelsoi, and expects to lake up his new duties early in July. Mr Ormond Wilson has been nominaleo as Labour candidate for the Palmerston North seat at the coming election. Mr. J. Hodgens, sitting member, had previously announced his decision to retire at the end of the coming session of Parliament.
Brigadier-General F. B. Butler, of •he United States Army, arrived in Auckland by air on Saturday and is to go to Wellington Io discuss the purchase by the New Zealand Government. of surplus United S.ates equipment.
Mr. Prescott Childs, First Secretary to the United States Legation in New Zealand since January 1944, is returning to America by the Monterey, which sailed from Auckland on Monday. He was recently appointed Con-sul-General and First Secretary to the United States Embassy at Havana.
