TRAMWAY DERAILMENTS
EFFECT OF BROKEN RAILS “Twenty-eight tram derailments occurred during the year. 17 of which were due to broken or defective rail flanges, and five were due to broken points,” stated the tramways engineer and manager (Mr. Row). He reported also that there was an abnormal number of collisions with other vehicles, summarised as follows: —Collisions with motor cars, 18; with motor trucks, 10; motor omnibus, 1; motor-cycle, 1; cyclists, 2; pedestrian. I; tram, 1; total, 34. "In no case was there serious damage to the tram cars, nor were any serious personal injuries involved. One motor-car was extensively damaged, but in most other cases bent mudguards and bumpers were the only outcome." Mr. Row added.
