GAOL FOR BOOKMAKING
14 DAYS FOR NON-MEMBER OF “ASSOCIATION” (P.A.) Whangarei. April 23. "I have made it plain enough what happens. He'will be sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment.” This was the answer made by the magistrate, Mr. W. C. Harley, in the Whangarei Court to-day, to a plea bycounsel for leniency for John Dean Grant, aged 28, agent, Whangarei, who pleaded guilty to using premises as a common gaming house. Detective - Sergeant Finlay said Grant had opened premises in Vine Street about three weeks ago, as a lending library. Late yesterday afternoon Detective Mahood and Sergeant H. Hedley visited the premises, where they found eight men. Grant had frankly admitted using the premises for bookmaking purposes. Grant had acepted about £206 in win and place bets, paying totalisator odds with limits higher than those paid by lhe Bookmakers’ Association, of which he was not a member. The magistrate: Bookmakers' Association ? Detective-Sergeant Finlay: I understand there is such a thing under the name of the Sportsmen’s Association. It was referred to recently in lhe Supreme Court. Although Grant claimed to occupy the premises himself, the police had good reason to believe he was employed by a bookmaker operating further north, said Detective-Sergeant Finlay.
