CEMENT WORKS MAY HAVE TO CLOSE

ACUTE SHORTAGE OF COAL (P-A.) Whangarei, April 23. The manager of Wilson’s Cement Works at Portland told the Press today that operations were seriously affected by the shortage of coal. Two kilns, representing half the capacity of the works, have shut down sinc« last Wednesday. This was equivalent io a loss of 2000 tons of cement weekly. Sufficient coal was on hand to run at half capacity for three or four days. If no further supplies, of which there are none so far in sight, came forward, a complete shutdown is inevitable. On two op more occasions last year the works just escaped closing down, because of the coal shortage.
