U.S. SENDS A MISSION OF INSPECTION ALL ASPECTS OF VARIOUS ISLANDS TO BE REPORTED ON New York, April 7. A fifteen-man mission, composed of Military, economic, agricultural and geological experts, left for the Pacific to inspect all major and secondary islands, in order to recommend to the Joint Chiefs of Staff those which ought to be improved as permanent bases and Iho.se which should be abandoned. The New York '’Herald Tribune’s” Washington correspondent says the mission, while paying particular attention to the Gilberts, the Marshalls, Marianas and Carolines, will also visit the Ellice and Solomon Islands. It is reported that some important military men consider that lhe United States should retain at least, a foothold on some of the mineral-rich Pacific islands. The mission will inspect minutely every island, observing strategic factors and also the island’s ability to support troops and maintain large scale installations. Truk will be built up as a strong naval base. women’s organisations.
