SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. J. A. Alexander, Maxwell, is visiting Rotorua. Mrs. Laurence Carey, of Cambridge, i who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. | E. B. Cooke, St. John’s Hill, has re- ’ turned home. Miss Dulcie Howie leaves to-day for a visit to Hunterville, and will be the guest of Mrs. J. D. Lilturn, “Drysdale.” Not often, if ever, has a woman been honoured in the way in which Mrs. G. H. Thomson was honoured by the Star Rugby Football Club’s annual meeting at New Plymouth, when she was elected a life memoer in recognition of her services, Dr. Thomson, in acknowledging the honour on his wife’s behalf, said she had once played as wing three-quarters for a country school, so could be classed perhaps as an ex-footballer. Sister Williams, because of illhealth, has found herself unable to continue as lady superintendent of the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Wangaui sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. She has tendered her resignation to a meeting of the detachment, which has accepted it with regret. Sister Williams has been a source of great inspiration to the service, and the society very much regrets that she is now unable to continue. ENGAGEMENTS. Pearson—McDevitt.— The engagement is announced between Kathleen Elsie, only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick McDevitt, of Ashburton, and John Stuart, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pearson, of i Ohakune. Drayton—Reid.— The engagement L announced between John Beck younger son of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. Drayton, Rangataua, and Sybil, younger daughter of Mrs. and the late Mr. S. F. Reid, Mangaweka.
