WELCOME HOME DANCE (0.C.) Hunterville, March 7. There was a large attendance in the Town Hall on Tuesday yvening. when members of the forces recently returned from overseas were guests of honour at. a social and dance. Those welcomed were Sister Betty Taylor. Lieut. Alex Cameron, P. Weston. J. Purves, H. Hirst, L. Hatfull and I. Aitken. Apologies for absence were received from R. and D. Holford and P. Sutton. Mr. R. A. Gordon, chairman of the patriotic committee, said that they had gathered to extend greetings to the last of the district’s men and women returning from overseas with the exception of those who were serving in J-Force. He paid a tribute to the district's contribution to the war effort and referred particularly to the part played by the nursing service, which was represented that night by Sister Taylor. A welcome on behalf of the R.S.A. was extended by Mr. R. M. S. Jones (president), who assured those recently returned of the interest and active sunport of the association Each guest briefly replied and as the party left the stage they were accorded musical honours. Music for the dance was provided by the Midnight Revellers, with Mr. T. Husband at the piano, while extras were played by Mr. M. Henwood. The duties of M.C. were carried out bj’ Mr. A. McAlley. f,. CRICKET Hunterville's chances of securing a six-point win against Utiku at the week-end were marred by rain which set in during the afternoon. Utiku were dismissed for 40, Keene, 20 not ‘out, being the only batsman to make a stand. Duncan took five wickets for 12, Finney three for 18, and Darvill two for 5. Hunterville had put on 48 without loss when rain stopped play. Finney was 19 not out and Duncan 29 not out. TRUCK DRIVER INJURED While making repairs to his truck at the depot of Hill's Carrying Company on Tuesday, Mr. J. McLachlan slipped aifl fell in the track of another vehicle. A wheel passed over his shoulder and he suffered a dislocated shoulder and lacerations. After receiving medical attention he was removed to Wanganui Hospital. GENERAL ITEMS At the last meeting of the Young Farmers' Club the guest speaker was Dr. G. H. B. Whitta, who addressed members on the application of firstaid for accidents on farms. He was accorded a vote of thanks for a most instructive lecture on an all-import-ant subject. Over 20 local swimmers will be taking part in the carnival at Taihape on Saturday. There was no local carnival last night due to the cold but it is hoped to stage the remainder ot the championship events next week.
