RANGITIKEI COUNTY

ENGINEER’S REPORT ON VARIOUS ROADS

The Works Department had approved of a tender for forming and metalling a deviation on the Makohau Road, stated the engineer, Mr. S. A. R. Mair, in his monthly report to the Rangitikei County Council at the monthly meeting in Marton yesterday. He added that the water tunnel had been satisfactorily completed, and that contractors for the formation and other work were expected to start at an early date. The chairman, Cr. K. W. Dalrymple, presided, also in attendance being Crs. G. L. Marshall, A. S. Coleman, H. G. Stewart, J R. L. Hammond, A. D. Mair, J. M. B. Collier, V. Smith and W. Doole, and the county clerk, Mr. F. L. Nicol, and the engineer. Leave of absence was granted Cr. R. G. Dalziell. In a detailed report of the various ridings, the engineer stated that the dry weather had caused roads in the coastal area of the Rangitoto Riding to unravel. Apart from this, the roads were in fair order.

In the Otakapu Riding, however, the weather had caused the Wangaehu Valiev Road to not. only unravel, but also corrugate badly, with the result that more trimming with a grader was necessary. The lower Turakina Valiev, Ratana and Turakina Beach roads had all been trimmed. Repairs were being carried out. to the decking of a bridge on Beach Road, which spanned the Makirikiri Stream. In the Porewa Riding general maintenance had been carried out and all roads were in fair order. A somewhat similar position obtained in the Wangaehu Riding. The Ongo, Turakina Valley, Murlmutu, and Kie Kie Roads (Otairi Riding) had all been trimmed with a grader. In the Awarua Riding, old culverts on the Toe Toe and Torere Roads had been replaced with concrete pines. Old wooden culverts had also been replaced in the Te Kapun Riding.

"The attention of the Hawke’s Bay County Council has been drawn to the bad state of the Ngaruroro River Bridge at Kuripapango, as this is under their control,” the engineer stated, referring to the Erewhon Riding. He added that, the TaihancNapier Road, Rangitikei County, was in good order. Last month repairs were carried out to the decking of the Makomiko Stream Bridge, near Whittle’s (Erewhon Riding). Firebreaks had been oloughed and ragwort, cleared in the H 1 hit ahi pinn plantation.
