SANDERS CUP

FIRST RACE WON BY AUCKLAND KEENLY CONTESTED EVENT (P-A.) Christchurch, Jan. 28. Davina, Auckland, defender of the Sanders Cup won the first race of the 1946 contest at Lyttelton this afternoon. It was a keenly contested race and Auckland’s win was not an easy one for various boats were in the lead in, turn, and right to the finish Auckland was being strongly challenged by Victory, the Canterbury boat. The race was watched by a large number of spectators both ashore and afloat.

A windward ano leeward course was chosen for the race and the boats were sent awav punctually at 2.30 p.m. The wind was light to a fresh northeast. and all the boats carried fourman crews with the exception of Otago, which had aboard a light weather crew of three.

The finish was. as follows, elapsed times being given:—Davina, Auckland, 2 hours 3 minutes 28sec. 1; Victory, Canterbury. 2/4/13 2; Evelyn, Otago, 2/4/56 3; Gallina, South Canterbury, 2/7/50 4: Delight. Wellington, 2/8/5 5; Vorena, Southland, 2/12/58 6. The second race to-morrow morning will be over a tringular course. Should Auckland win the morning race no race will be held in the afternoon, but should another boat win an afternoon race will be probable.
