FIRE BRIGADE PICNIC (0.c.) Hunterville, Jan. 29 Enthusiasm and initiative mark the efforts of the Hunterville Volunteer Five Brigade, both in the serious business of fire-fighting and in the organising of its social activities. Its annual picnic, 'always an outstanding event prior to the war, was suspended during the war years, but on Sunday last, the yearly fixture was revivea again and with all the success which ciowned previous efforts. Lorries conveyed hundreds of interested supporters and their friends to an ideal picnic ground at the Rangitikei River near Vinegar Hill, and a very enjoyable day was spent in swimming and in other organised sports. Credit is due to Captain R. A. Gordon and Secretary G. Shindler, who had the support of a strong committee in organising the fixture. Results of the various events are as follows:

An outstanding programme of horse events will be staged by the Hunterville Sports Club on the local Domain on Saturday. The open hunters' contest carries a challenge cup and £l2 for first prize, while a challenge cup and a prize of £5 goes to the winner of the ladies’ jumping competition. All other sections are well catered for, the cash prizes amounting to £BO. There will also be an attractive programme of children’s events during the afternoon, while an added attraction this year will be the organised by the Red Cross in aid of the “Food for Britain Fund.” Refreshments will be available on the grounds. WELCOME HOME TO MAORI SOLDIERS
On Friday evening next the Rata Marae Committee will hold a welcome home to recently returned members of the Maori Battalion. The evening will take the form of a social and dance, and the function will be unique in many ways.
