DEFEAT OF JACK CRAWFORD
AUSTRALIAN TENNIS SENSATION Reed. 6 p.m. Adelaide, Jan. 23. By defeating Jack Crawford in the men’s singles, Max Bonner, of Victoria, caused a first major upset in the Australian tennis championships. Bonner won 10-8, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, He has now entered the quarter-finals with Quist, Pails, Brown, Harper, Brodie, Hopman and Bromwich. Bonner and Crawford both relied on their accuracy of ground stroking. A protracted first set, in which at times the ball crossed the not 50 to 60 times before a point was decided, probably sealed '.he fate of the match. Crawford began to tiro, but Bonner maintained a. steady play throughout, giving nothing away.
