Marton, like many other centres, is suffering from a shortage of labour, and in the last 10 days there have been many positions vacant in the town. The shortage covers all types of work, from tradesmen to shop and restaurant assistants. One eng peering firm required six extra hands recently, and although it was fortunate in obtaining the men, some firms have not had such success.

A factory employing a large staff of girls will shortly require a further 40 assistants and when up to full strength, will be the largest employer of labour in the district. New businesses have opened in the town, and although the majority are employing only small staffs, the small pool of available labour is rapidly be.ng exhausted. THE HOUSING SHORTAGE An advertiser recently advertised in the Wanganui "Chronicle” that he had three rooms to let and up till mid-day on Wednesday he had received fourteen applicants.
