N.Z. SERVICE PAPERS
CESSATION OF PUBLICATION ANNOUNCED (P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 15. Two New Zealand service newspapers published overseas, the “N.Z.E.F. Times” in Italy and the “Southern Cross” in London, have now ceased publication, the acting-Prime Minister, Mr. Nash, stated to-day. Paying tribute to the work of the staffs of both papers, Mr. Nash said the publications had served an essential purpose in keeping the servicemen and servicewomen in close touch with New Zealand news. They were both newspapers of a high standard, and with the exception of “Parade,” the British Army pictorial weekly, the
“N.Z.E.F. Times” was the oldest established army publication in the Middle East. It commenced publication in June, 1941, and continued unbroken as a weekly until the recent. Christmas issue. It was first published in Cairo and was moved to Bari, Italy, at the beginning of 1944. The “Southern Cross” commenced publication in England at the beginning of last year and the last issue was published on January 12. It is proposed to publish a service newspaper on similar lines to these papers for the New Zealand troops who will form part of the Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan.
