“WE WANT TO GO HOME”
DEMONSTRATION BY UX SOLDIERS Recd. 6 p.m. Paris, Jaa. 8 “We want to go home,” shouted 500 American soldiers who marched down the Champs Elysees to the American Embassy in a demonstration of sympathy with fellow soldiers in the Pacific.
The demons.ration, which was called tlnough anonymous notices in Red Cross and messes, was short-lived and the soldiers dispersed after halting before the Embassy gates and delivering short speeches. President Truman, discussing demobilisation problem, at a Press conference in Washington, attributed the current slow down to the critical need for troops overseas. He said he was convinced that the Army and Navy were being demobilised with commendable efficiency and justice to all concerned.
Tile President added that the Army had released more than 4,750,000 of 8,300,000 in service when the European war ended. The Navy had released nearly 1,250,000 of 3,500,000, the Marine Corps 183,000 of 486,000, and the Coastguard 74,000 of 180,000. These numbers were staggering when one considered what they meant In ships, the extensive staffs required to carry out processing before discharge and rail . ransport. ,
