N.Z. BUILT SHIP AT TOKIO
SERVING WITH U.S. NAVY (P.A.) Auckland, Jan. 9 An Aucklancl-buili boat is at present serving at Tokio with the United States Navy. She is the YF 1045. a 114 ft powered lighter, built by the United Ship and Boat-Builders Ltd.,
and was delivered to the United States Navv on August 14, the day before VJ-Dav.
The last of nine composite powered lighters delivered io the Navy, the YF 1045 was commissioned by Commander A. C. Bushey, U.S.N., as officer in charge of United States naval shipbuilding in New Zealand. Six similar vessels were also built the United States Army.
With steei frames, kauri planking, and Australian iron bark keels, the vessels were built to New Zealand design. They have a beam of 241 t and a dead weight tonnage of 225,
twin masts stepped amidships and have double derricks 1o facilitate the handling of cargo from two hatches. Diesel engines drove the twin screws. The craft were easily recognisable because of the high noop which contained the officers’ quarters aft. Accommodation was provided for a crew of 14.
Other Auckland vessels built for the American 1 , have seen service as far north as Leyte and Okinawa, but lhe YF 1045 is believed to be the first io ha\<‘ reached Japan.
