PROCESS OF SELECTION
PROFESSOR TOOKER’S VIEW Christchurch, Dec. 26 ‘‘Recent public comment indicates that the question oft limiting entries to university colleges is still imperfectly understood," said Professor A. H. tocker, rector of Canterbury University College, in a statement on the selection of university entrants for 1946. "It is possible, although unlikely, that except in the Otago Medical School limitation may be unnecessary, but all four university colleges are preparing to limit entrants if the number of applicants makes it necessary All are facing much the same difficulties and the position at Canterbury College is at least indicative of the conditions in the other colleges. “The increased numbers have placed a very heavy strain on the facilities of the college and al.-o on its finances. It cannot significantly increase its staff, accommodation, etc., without additional buildings. It has had plans prepared for building extensions for years past, but progress has been held up under existing conditions, since it must depend on the Government for money, materials, etc. Meanwhile emergency arrangements have been stretched to the utmost. "The fact must be faced that the existing organisation cannot stand further strain without serious effects. The first rejections will be of present students who have not made satisfactory progress in their studies and of new applicants who are least qualified for their proposed courses."
