SYDNEY PROFESSORSHIP BRILLIANT NEW ZEALANDER Sydney, Dec. 22 Dr. Keith Edward Bullen, a 39-year-eld New Zealander with brilliant qualification; has been appointed to the Chair of Applied Mathematics, which was recently established by the University of Sydney. Dr. Bullen obtained‘his M.A. degree, with firstclass honours in mathematics, in 1927, and from 1928 to 1931 was lecturer ,n mathematics at Auckland University College. In 1931 he went to Cambridge, where he continued his studies in mathematics and gained the degree ol doctor of philosophy. While at Cambridge he held a Strathcona Exhibition at St. John’s College and was selected to give a course of advanced lectures at Hull University. Returning to New Zealand in 1934, he resumed his position as senior lecturer
at Auckland University College and held the post until 1'940, when he transferred to the University of Melbourne. Dr. Bullen is an applicant for the degree of doctor of science al the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Bullen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Bullen, Herne Bay. Auckland. lie was educated at the Bayfield School and the Auckland Boys’ Grammar School. He gained a junior national scholarship in 1919 and a senior national scholarship in the following year. In 1922 he gained the Eric H. Astley prize for first in mathematics and science in the upper sixth form and won a university entrance scholarship. He was a full-lime student at Auckland University College from 1923 Io 1925, in his first year winning the college premium in pure mat hematics. In 1926 ho completed his Bachelor of Arts course, ■’a sing the honours examination 'in 1928 with a first-class in mathematics, while on the staff of the Auckland Grammar School. Dr. Bullen, who is a fellow ot the Royal Astronomical Society has had published over 30 research papers, chiefly on the theory of the earth’s interior. His findings on the variation of den ity inside the earth are referred to as authoritative in standard interna ional works. Another section of his research concerns the effect of the earth’s ellipticity on the travel-times of earthquake waves, which was described in a Bri ish As-c-ciation report as "the most important advance in theoretical seismology I’or the year 1937." He has also published a’ number of papers dealing with earthquake problems in New Zealand. In recognition of his services in his department Dr. Bullen recently was granted the degree of Master of Artof the Melbourne University.
