DUBLIN STREET BRIDGE
LACK OF MATERIAL HAS DELAYED REPAIRS. Lack of material has delayed repair work on the footway and roadway of the Dublin Street bridge. This was] explained on Saturday by the city engineer (Mr. L. F. Row). Mr. Row said that provision was made in the estimates for the decking of the footway to be renewed, but supplies of timber were hard to get, and when the timber arrived it was green and is now being seasoned. The work will be put in hand and completed as the seasoned timber becomes available.
Regarding the roadway, Mr. Row said that the material required to make a satisfactory job there is special Trinidad rock asphalt. The existing surface was put down nine years ago, and material to replace it has been on order for some time. It has only just come to hand. To tackle the job properly the full plant and specialised labour are required. These will be available in the very near future. Pending the arrival of the required material for a permanent job, all the council could do was patch the existing surface as well as possible. Mr. Row made these explanations so that the impression would not get abroad that the council was unaware of the need for improvement on the bridge. Steps were taken many months ago to obtain the necessary material.
