Kakariki too Good for Marton At Kakariki Marton B ■ could only score 40 and 48 to Kakariki’s first inning's total of 147. For Kakariki, Ashton 76, Rodgers 41, and Bishop 13 were the top scorers, while Filler, four for 47, Roache, 3 for 9, and Neilsen, one for 7, bowled well. Marton's first innigs included 20 by Fitler, who was the only player to reach double figures, while in their second innigs, Fitler 13, Lea 11, and Kerr 10, did the bulk of the scoring. ST. STEPHEN S DAY SCHOOL There was a large attendance at the annual prize-giving of St. Stephen's Day School on Tuesday night. The Rev. N. Williams addressed the gathering, and specially thanked Mrs. Childs for the good work done at the school during the year. He was pleased to state that Mrs. Janet Willis would be joining the teaching staff at the beginning of 1946. After the prize-giving the children entertained with a varied programme which was greatly enjoyed. SEASON’S GREETINGS At the Marlon Court on Tuesday, at the conclusion of the sitting, Mr. Standford, on behalf of the Marton Bar, extended to Mr. Coleman, S.M., the season’s greetings and thanked His Worship for his courtesy and help at all times extended to the Bar. In thanking Mr. Standford for his good wishes Mr. Coleman reciprocated, and said he much appreciated the goodwill and help of the profession. RETURNING FROM OVERSEAS The following Marton district Navy personnel from overseas will arrive at Marton on December 24: L.D.G. Stoker M. R. Cozens (Bulls), A.B. J. H. Childs (Mar.on) and L.D.G. Sig. J. N. Hardie (Hunterville).

BOROUGH AFFAIRS. WORK IN THE BOROUGH.

At the meeting of the Marton Borough Council on Wednesday evening, Mr. W. R. Brant overseer, reported on the work carried out during the month:—“Boadway: Eight chains of path, 12ft. wide has received a coat of Colfix and top dressed with pre-mix and rolled. Also 2 chains Bft. wide on Follett Street. Ross Street: Fourteen chains of path, Bft. wide has been metalled, tarred, chipped and rolled. Beaven Street: Fourteen chains of path, Bft. wide has been metalled, tarred, chipped and rolled. Ngareta Street: Fourteen chains of path, Bft. wide has been tarred, chipped and rolled. French Street: Twelve chains of path, Bft. wide has been metalled and rolled. Blackwell Street: Four chains of road, Utt. wide has been tarred, asphalted and rolled: Station Road: The culvert across Station Road has been tarred and asphalted. The reservoir is holding 25ft. of water and embankments are in good order. Hemlock has been cleared along the Tutaenui Stream, and at the Centennial Park.”

The gas manager (Mr. A. J. Holden) reported: “During the month 72 tons 13cwt. of coal were carbonised, yielding an average of eight bags of coke to the ton of coal.” The town clerk reported that receipts amounted to £3628 13s Bd, including rates £2171 2s 7d, Town Hall £76 Ils 6d, water charge £l2B 2s, licences £220 18s, gas department £735 5s 9d.

The following building permits were issued: T. J. Mcllwaine, new house, £1725; G. Rasmussen, re-erect-ing shed, £3O; H. J. Higham, alterations, £10; Mrs. Mulvay, new shed, £3O; Production Engineering Co., additions, £400; J. Jensen, glassed in porch, £l7 10s; W. G. Wade, alterations, £62 ss. At a special meeting of the council a resolution was carried making and levying a special rate of 5-8 d in the £ on all rateable property in the borough of Marton as security for a special loan of £4500 in connection with the water supply. MARTON JUNCTION SCHOOL. BREAKING-UP CEREMONY. The annual prize-giving and breaking up ceremony of the Marton Junction School took place on Wednesday afternoon. There was a large gathering of parents and friends. The chairman of the school committee spoke a few words to the parents and children. He specially thanked the headmaster, Mr. Tank, and his staff for the high standard of work done by the school during the year. Rev. NigPl Williams spoke to the parents and children, and then unveiled the War Memorial Tablet. in memory of the old boys of the school, who seryfed in the Great War and in the last 'war. The tablet was made and presented by Mr. P. Rhodes, of Rata. The headmaster, Mr. Tank, in his annual report, stated that during the year, with the exception of Miss Stevens, the school had received a complete change of teachers and Mr. Hogan’s appointment terminates on January 31. In the field of sport many opportunities have been afforded our boys and girls during the year and now, thanks to Miss Stevens and Mr. Hogan, the children willingly take part in organised school games. The committee grated £2O for sports mater.al and parents willingly placed their cars at our disposal, for which we are grateful. We have a total of 12 boys in Standards 4. 5 and 6, which is not enough for a Rugby team. In February next we are to have the use of the Marton baths from 2 to 3 p.m. on three afternoons a week for

instruction in swimming and life-sav-ing. In concluding Mr. Tank stated that the school is closing with a roll numbering 'l4B. The school is built to accommodate 188 pupils and five teachers. He thanked all those who had assisted to make his work in Mayton Junction so very pleasant. To the 10 pupils who are leaving, he wished them wel. The school motto, which they see every day, says: “He conquers who conquers himself,” a literal translation of which could be “Be a sport and play the game" and wished them all the compliments of the season.
