SUCCESSOR TO LEAGUE
CERTAIN PRINCIPLES REQUIRED Wellington, Dec. 15 “In a few days I will be leaving for a conference of the United Nations to establish the successor to the League of Nations, and I hope we will establish it successfully,” said the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) speaking at the Scots College prize-giving last evening. “There are certain principles which must be believed in if the new league is to be greater than its predecessor,” he said. “There was nothing wrong with the League of Nations and its concept of a world brotherhood based on the Christian cencept of peace. The fault was that the people and Governments of the world were not worthy of It and did not adhere to the principles laid down at Versailles.”
Mr. Fraser said that three great men, Mr. Bevin, Mr. Byrnes, and Mr. Molotov, would meet shortly in Moscow and on their discussions would depend the lives cf millions of human beings. "We have escaped out of the snare of the Nazis and Fascists and we have to see that our souls remain free and do not accept from nations big or small, or from a combination of nations, fear, terror, or coercion by terror” said Mr Fraser. “The alternative to destruction is peace on earth and good will towards men.” We were arriving at a stage when many of tfie old ideas were disappearing because they were worn out. The
policy of all the nations must be to help one another. We were only a small country, but we had done our share during the war and had believed in our cause. “Our boys of to-dav are as good, and in my opinion better, than the boys who went before, and it is on them that the task falls of making the world safe for humanity.”
