BLOCK TO BE ERECTED BY HOUSING DEPARTMENT

An indication that the Department of Housing Construction will build a block of fiat; for pensioners' on sites it has already acquired in Tinirau Street, Wanganui East, was given at •he monthly meeting of the Wanganui City Council last night. The council offered the department other land for homes if it agreed to build flats on sites already acquired. As a result, the departmeni’s land purchasing officer was in Wanganui recently and an a surance given that the erection of flats in Tinirau Street would bo carried out. This was reported by the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, a 4he meeting last night. A question to bo discussed with the department is that of widening Tinirau Street, he added. Some months ago the council decided to build pen ioners’ flats, but it was found that cos s wer such tnat higher rentals than originally intended would have to be charged.
