CLARKE QUITS RING
DEFECTIVE EYESIGHT HIS MAIN REASON
(P.A.) Wellington, Dec. 19. “I have quit the ring. I have fought mv last fight, and am leaving for Sydney on Sunday ” said Bobby Clarke, Australian middleweight boxer, who was defeated by Bos Murphy last night. In making this announcement today, he said he was makin; no excuses for his defeat and considered Murphy a grand lighter, but he had reluctantly come to the decision because of defective eyesight. His trainer, Pat Connors, said Clarke had suffered from desert blindness contracted when with the R.A.A.F. in Egvpt in 1940. He had worn glasses after his discharge, but had later discarded them. The trouble did not affect him in the dav time, but it was clear he was not measuring his distances with it under the glare of ring lights.
