N.S.W. HEAT WAVE
DEATH ROLL NOW ELEVEN Recd. 11 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 18. With the death of a nine-months-old baby to-day, at Hamilton Gates, near Broken Hill, the heat-wave death toll has now reached 11. Broken Hill’s flying doctor set out on a dramatic race to try and save the child, but engine trouble forced him down before he reached his destination. After seven days of intense heat, with temperatures soaring beyond. 100 degrees, Broken Hill’s two reservoirs have dried up, and the city is now being supplied with water by train from the Darling River. Temperatures in New South Wales to-day ranged up to 108 degrees, with 106 degrees being recorded at Broken Hill.
