PRIVATE FIRMS ARE GOING AHEAD
PLANS FOR AIR SERVICES Recd. 8.10 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 18. Flans by Australian National Airways and other operators to bring half the country's residents of Australia within two hours’ Hying distance of their nearest capital were announced in Melbourne to-dav by the managing director of Australian National Airways, Captain Ivan Holyman. In the meantime it is expected in Canberra that the Government will go ahead with the establishment of its own air services. Cabinet is considering legal opinion on the High Court decision of Friday declaring illegal the mononolies Provision of the Airlines Act.
The view shared by several Ministers is that the Government, while bowing to 1 he High Court verdict that privately-owned airlines could not be excluded, should launch Governmentowned services.
Cantain Holyman said the withdrawal of airmail subsidies would make no difference to Australian Naiianal Airways plans for expansion in the post-war period. In addition to bringing 50 ner cent, of the people within two hours of the capitals, 30 per cent, o! the remainder will be brought within four hours and the balance within eight hours.
