100 YEARS OLD

MRS. M. B. SALMON, OF MT. EDEN

To have a cake with 100 candles was the rare achievement of Mrs. Margare. Baxter Salmon, ol the Eventide Home, Mount Eden, when she entertained the other residents on Monday on the occasion of her birthday. Mrs. Salmon was born on December 17, 1845, in South Moulton Street, off Oxford Stree , London, within the sound of Bow Bells. In 1874 she came to New Zealand as matron in charge of a party ot girl immigrants in the ship Oxford and a year later married Mr. James Salmon, a tailor, at a mission station. They lived at Taupo, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Te Aroha and Tauranga where Mr. Salmon died about 30 years ago. Mrs. Salmon then came to Auckland to live with her daughter, Mrs. W. W. Macferson, of View Road. Mount Eden. In recent years she has lived at Evenside Home, opposite the residence of her daughter. Mrs. Salmon now spends most her time in bed. Her sight and hearing are impaired, but her mind is very active and she has a keen sense of humour. She has vivid memories of the early days in New Zealand. She remembers Auckland at the time of her arrival as resembling a small English town. She can also recall the Tarawera eruption which occurred when she was living at Taupo. Mrs. Salmon has one son. Mr. H. E. Salmon, of Mangere. Her seven grandchildren are Mrs. E. C. Patterson, of Mount Eden, Mrs; V. Troughton. of Waharoa, Mr. Colin Macferson, Miss H. Macferson. Mr. James Macferson, all of Mt. Eden. Mrs. F. Vet'.e, and Mr. K. Johnston, both of Mamuka. Of the 15 great-grand-children, Mr. Keith Patterson, of Mangere Bridge, aged 20, is the oldest.

101ST BIRTHDAY WHANGAReT WOMAN CELEBRATES (P.A.) Whangarei, Dec. 18. Born in Queen Street, Auckland, Mrs. Annie Teller, of Whangarei, was 101 to-day. Her husband, with whom she developed a virgin farm at Parua Bay, has been dead for 62 years. Mrs. Teller has 118 direct descendants, including four- great great grandchildren of the original family of 12, two, over 70, predeceased her. Two grandsons were killed in wars and one accidentally.
