CALLED OFF STRIKE
WATERSIDE WORKERS AT PORT CHALMERS
(P.A.) Dunedin, Dec. 4 The 250 members of the Waterside Workers’ Union at Pore Chalmers who have been strike since last Thursday, resumed work in the docks and on the wharves at 1 o'clock thio afternoon. Their decision to call off the strike was the outcome of an under laking received from Wellington and discussed at a meeting, that their grievances involving conditions ami rates of pay for dock workers, as compared with those for work on wharves, had been con idered by the national executive of the union and that certain recommendations would be made to the Minister of Marine. The action of the national executive in evading the claims of watersider.s to have their award placed on the same basis as the one covering dock workers was discussed at the mee - Ing. The opinion was widely expressed that the executive's delay in dealing With grievances had precipitated the strike.
Two vessels affected by the dispute, the overseas vessel Glenoble and the coastal motor vessel Storm, will now be worked. Glenoble had only loaded 700 bale; of her cargo of 21,000 bales to be shipped to the United Kingdom. It is expected that Glenoble will adhere to the original sailing schedule and leave Port Chalmers at lhe end of the week.
