NO EARLY END TO DISPUTES

STOPPAGES IN AUSTRALIA (Recd. 8 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 23. Union leaders to-day saw no early end to the disputes which are strangling Australian heavy industries. Much will depend in the next few days on arrangements being made for feeding the idle army, estimated at 16,000, and the extent of the miners’ support in the calling of coal supplies. The Port Kembla men have been idle for nine weeks, and the Newcastle men for four weeks. Nine mines are idle to-day over the Broken Hill Proprietary issue, and four others shopped for other reasons. The coal loss for the week is 60.000 tons, compared with 24,000 tons last week. Messages from Melbourne say Victoria’s coal position in so grave that a major shut-down of industry before the end of the year appears almost inevitable.
