KILLING GERMS BY SOUND

FORM OF ATOMIC ENERGY Recd. 9.35 p.m. Melbourne. Nov. 23 A machine that kills germs by sound lias been invented by a Melbourne electrical engineer, Mr. R. Shick, who describes his method as “a form of atomic energy.” In appearance the machine is a cross between a wireless set and an ice-chest. It has been devised in co-operation with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research for the destruction of bacteria in making serums. Called a sound oscillator, the machine violently shakes germs with sound and the vibration throws them to pieces. Tests have shown that, after a few minutes, the gprms are smashed to smithereens. Mr. Shick said: “While atomic energy is being used, we are not splitting the atom but throwing one against the other. The force multiplies terrifically, ami would produce something akin to the atomic energy used on the Japanese cities.”

Similar machines would be capable of killing bacteria in milk by heating without destroying its value.
