BAR TO HIS D.S.C.

NAVAL AIRMAN FROM RATA Lieutenant (temporary) Howard Alton Rhodes, D.S.C., of Rata, is included in the latest list of R.N.Z.N. awards for services in Pacific fighter sweeps in July and August of this year. He has been awarded a bar to his D.S.C. Lieutenant Rhodes is a son o£ Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Rhodes. Rata, and is an old boy of the Wanganui Collegiate School. He trained in England and gained his wings at the Uni.ed States airfield, Pensacola, subsequently operating from Royal Naval aircraft carriers in the Indian Ocean. He took part in fighter sweeps over Malaya, Sumatra, and Java before his carrier joined the British Pacific Fleet at Australia, and also over Formosa and Japan. For services over Sumatra he was mentioned in despatches, and for action over Formosa he gained his D.S.C. Lieutenant Rhodes has four Japanese aircraft to his credit.
