SITUATION IN JAVA
DUTCH STATEMENT SOON FIRING AT~MGHT TOE
Recd. 11 p.m. Batavia, Nov. 6 The situation In Java is quiet, but tense. The Lieutenant-Governor of the Netherlands East Indies, Dr. van Mook, is expected to make an important statement to-day on Dutch policy in the East Indies. This will beat a special Press conference which has been called for the purpose. A battle of rifle fire resounded in various parts of Batavia at intervals during the night, reports the Associated Press correspondent. In an affray outside the Governor-General’s palace between Dutch and Indonesians. one Dutchman was killed and one wounded. Neither British nor Indian troops were involved in any clashes, though there were reports ot shooting south of Remajoran and the main Batavia airfield.
A lookout on the Messter Cornells railway bridge, in the south-eastern suburban area, reported that crowds of people had massed. After a comparative calm there is an uneasy feeling in Batavia though by daytime all seems normal. The streets are full of bicycle traffic. More and more shops are open and kerbside markets flourish.
