NEW WEAPON AGAINST MALARIA
London, Nov. 5. An entirely new and revolutionary . compound, paludrine, for the treatment of malaria has been discovered by a team of British research workers. It is revolutionary because it is a departure from the conventional anti-malarial research. It is much simpler to manufacture and has a much wider influence than any known specific. Biologists nave been working on the new drug since 1942. Until recent years the oly drug f of real value agaist malaria was quinine, though two synthetic compounds —pamaquin and mepacrine (atebrin) —emerged in 1926 and 1930 respectively. Although paludrine has rot had tests over long periods, it has been used with outstanding sucres for the treatment of patients, not only at Liverpool, where it was discovered, but in Australia, where supplies were flown this year. Paludrine is more effective and considerably dess toxic than mepacrine and quinine, tl is colourless ard does not produce the undesirable yellowing effect encountered in most cases with mepacrine
