NO FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

COUNCIL AWAITING REPLY No further developments have occurred following the deadlock reached by the Wanganui City Council a week ago regarding its attitude toward the control of milk. A resolution carried at the meeting was forwarded immediately to the Milk Marketing Division in Wellington, but from inquiries made yesterday it is understood that so fai no raply has been received. This resolution was to the effect that the question of the city milk supply be deferred, pending an assurance being received from the Government that the cost of taking over the present treating house, or the erection of a new treating house, would not at anytime be a charge on the ratepayers. Actually, the City Council has been constituted the Milk Authority for Wanganui since July 15, and has been gazetted as such. The council refused to take over control, however, till certain difficulties were overcqpe, and as a result, of a request to the authorities Mr. A. Blake, investigating officer for the Milk Marketing Division, was sent to Wanganui to take charge.

Mr. Blake .subsequently met the council at, a special meeting held a fortnight ago and gave a verbal report. The council then decided that upon receipt of advice from the Milk Marketing Division that (he report made by Mr. Biake into the local milk supply disclosed a satisfactory position the council would be prepared to assume the functions of a milk authority. The council asked, however, that beforetaking control it be furnished with evidence that the local milk supply problems had been overcome. When the ordinary monthly n7°eting of the council was held r. w'ok ago a written report was submitted by Mr. Blake, but most of the councillors expressed the view that this did not, disclose a satisfactory position, and the question of taking control was again deferred.
