MILK FOR WANGANUI
BROUGHT FROM MANAWATU NO HEAVY TRAFFIC LICENCE ‘ “At that time the defendant company was transporting milk daily to Wanganui, but the load was greater than they realised," said Inspector J. H. Delves, who appeared for the Transport Department in the Magistrate’s Court. Wanganui, yesterday, when the Manawatu Milk Cream Co., Ltd., was charged with not having a heavy traffic licence. Mr. J. H. Salmon, S. M., imposed a fine of £2. with costs 10s. On a further charge of not having a warrant of fitness the company was fined 10s, costs 10s. Inspector Delves told the Court that he saw defendant company’s lorry coming up the Wangaehu Hill at 11.30 a.m. on July 17 with a load of milk. At Wanganui it was found that the overall weight of the vehicle was 2 ton, 14:1 cwt. Because the total weight was more than two tons a heavy traflic licence was required. The magistrate commented that the company had written through its solicitors stating that in order to meet urgent requests for milk in Wanganui the lorry had been put on the road immediately, but a heavy traffic licence had not been taken out. “Whatever the urgency they were not entitled to do that,” the magistrate added.
