RED CROSS AND ST. JOHN

TRIBUTE FROM FORMER WAR PRISONER At the annual reunion of the Wanganui Rugby Referees’ Association on Saturday night, a guest, Sergeant W. A. Dale, of Wellington, formerly of the Marist Rugby Wanganui, paid a remarkable tribute to the Joint Council of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and (he New Zealand Red Cross Society. Sergaant Dale was four years a pri-soner-of-war in Germany.

“But for what those two bodies did in war work many a New Zealander would not have come home,” said Sergeant Dale. “Whenever anybody puts a collection box under my eyes for either the Red Cross or the St. John Ambulance, in goes my donation without question. I feel 1 would not be here but for what they did.” Sergeant Dale added that he played Rugby in Germany and took part in every match his side participated in. They played against “international” sides—Wales, England, Scotland and South Africa. He predicted that in the years to come more Englishmen would turn to Rugby than ever before.
