JUNIOR BANDSMEN

SOLO AND QUARTETTE CONTESTS \ Marked success attended the 1945 junior bandsmen’s solo and quartette contests, held in the Savage Cluo Hail on Saturday, under the auspices o( the Wanganui Bands’ Committee. Large entries were received from a wide area, and good organisation enabled the programme to be disposed of with a minimum of delay. There was good public patronage during the day, and the hall was crowded for the night session. At the end of the contest the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, presented the medals to the winners, and congratulated them on their success. Mr. W. Searle, chairman of the Bands’ Committee, referred to the success of the contest and said the entries had been more than gratifying. A high standard had been attained, and he thanked all who had contributed to the success of the contest, and the donors of medals. His remarks were supported by Mr. H. West, president of the Wanganui Garrison Band. Results were:— W Junior Bandsmen’s Solo (under 13 years): D. Dewe (Feilding Municipal), 90 points, 1; R. Hawkes (Stratford), 2; J. Johnston (Palmerston North City), W. Newth (Palmerston North City Silver), equal 3rd, with 80 points. The adjudicator said the winner gave an outstanding performance. The winner received a medal presented by Mr. J. Bevin, of the Wanganui Garrison Band. Under 15 and over 13: W. Leslie (Palmerston North City Silver), 98 points, 1; M. Thomas (Queent Alexandra), 97, 2; R. Cleveland (Queen Alexandra), 82, 3. The adjudicator said this was a closely-contested section.He remarked that he was impressed with the artistic performance of the winner. The winner received a medal presented by C. Humphrey, Queen Alexandra Band. Under 17 and over 15: J. Eyers (Wanganu* Garrison). 90 points, 1: K. Thorburn (Palmerston North Garrison), 85, 2; O. G. Dalby (Palmerston North Citv Silver), 81, 3. The adjudicator said this was not a difficult section, the winner stood out from the rest. Under 20 and over 17: T. McKie (Queen Alexandra), 93 points 1; B. A. Scrivener (New Plymouth) and J. V. Belgrave (Palmerston City Silver) 90 equal 2. The winner played with feeling and gave a fine performance said the adjudicator. The winner received a medal presented by Mr. T. McKie. In the* quartette section Palmerston North Garrison. No. 2, was Ist, with 82 points, and Wanganui Garrison No. 1, 81. was 2nd. Wanganui Garrison No. 2, Palmerston North City Silver and Palmerston North City Silver, No. 4, were all equal, 3rd. with 80 points. Members of the winning quartette were presented with medals donated by Mr. W. Searle.
