INTER-CLUB GOLF MARTON v. HAWKESTONE Members of the Marton and Hawke, stone Golf Clubs met. in an inter-club match on the Hawkestone links on Saturday, when a very pleasant afternoon’s golf was indulged in by th* 1 players. Hawkestone won by 6 games to 4. The results were as follows, Marton players being mentioned first: —Mrs. Morrison lost to Mrs. Fowler; Mrs. Whitford lost to Mrs. Franke; Mrs. Dickinson won from Miss T. McDonald; Mrs. Henderson halved with Mrs. Williams ;Mrs. Sladden won from Mrs. McLean; Mrs. Fenwicke lost to Mrs. Frederick; Mrs. Sinclair lost to Mrs. Murrow; Mrs Glasgow won from Mrs. Wood; Mrs. Wysocki won fom Mrs. Fogelberg; Mrs. Clarke lost to Mrs. ißofe; Miss Shannon lost to Miss Mor- ’ rison.

EXPERIENCES OF REHABILITATION.

The speaker at Monday’s meeting of the Marton Rotary Club was Mr. P. Bennett, who is the R.S.A. representative on the Lands Rehabilitation Committee and has had five years’ experience in dealing with the rehabilitation of returned soldiers. Mr. Bennett pointed out the many .difficulties and problems to solve in settling the men on the lane. Rotarian John Holdaway thanked the speaker for his enlightening talk, which was much appreciated by the members. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.

Mr. F. W. Ward, Commandery Commissioner of St .John Ambulance Brigade Overseas, in notifying Mrs. G. Grut of her promotion to the rank of lady district officer, offers his congratulations and trusts that she will enjoy many years’ service as a district officer, and wishes her every success in her new appointment. Mrs. Grut was previously lady superintendent of the Marton Nursing Division. TRAFFIC REGULATIONS. On three charges of breaches of the traffic regulations, Herbert J. Duckett appeared before Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., 'at Marton Court on Tuesday. On a ! charge of having no warrant of fitness | defendant was fined 10s and costs 10s. iOn having no registered licence he was fined 20s and costs 12s, and on a charge of overloading a motor cycle, a fine of 30s was inflicted. Traffic Inspector Horniblow stated that defenda t had carried two passengers on his motor cycle, which was a dangerous practice. Since the action was taken defendant had taken out the necessary licences.

There was a good attendance at the I ordinary monthly meeting of the Compost Club held on Monday night, at which Mr. S. A. R. Mair presided. Mr. J. M. Grant gave a very interesting talk on the growing of gladioli, making good use of a blackboard to illustrate, and also demonstrating with coi ms. Mr. Alan Gibson moved a vote of thanks to the speaker. Although it is within the scope of the Compost Club to conduct shows, several members considered that a separate Horticultural Society should he formed.. Enquiries are being made concerning equipment and expenses and the final decision concerning shows will be made at the next monthly meeting. TO-NIGHT’S ATTRACTION. The Marton A. and P. Mair (chairman) refcriecl with regret to the passing oi their revered patron, Mr. li. Y. methbridge, after a severe ace. dent. “A lifetime horticulturist and forester, Mr. Lethbridge loved his garden, and trees and had a wide knowledge of our native trees," sa.d the chairman. "As the foundation president ot our society we. with his wide circle of gardening friends, have enjoyed his generosity and advice to the lull, and his memory will ever be cher.sned oy all who had the privilege of h.s friendship." "During the year we have lost over the Great Divide two of our esteemed members in Messrs. H. H. Richardson and J. Brice," added Mr. Mair. Votes of sympathy to the bereaved relatives were carried in silence. The following resolution was carried in silence: "The pass.ng of our revered patron, the late Mr. H. Y. Lethbridge, has left a gap in our ranks hard to fill. A lifetime gardener and forester he enjoyed a wide circle of 1 garden-loving friends who, with our society, have long enjoyed his kindly friendship and generosity at his lovely ’Dalvey’ home. Our great totara has fallen, leav.ng a great gap in our rai ks but the inspiration to carry on with the work he loved." The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The financial position showed that the society had assets amounting to £425 13s sd, including bank ba-ince £133 6s 9d. Government, bonds, £99 5s Id.
