MILK IN WANGANUI
CITY COUNCIL CONTROL
A decision to hold a special meeting on July 31, to consider questions relating to its control of milk in Wanganui was reached by the City Council last night. Corrcspordence trom the Milk Marketing Division indicated that the council had been constituted the City Milk Authority as from July 15, but the division wished to continue its control of milk collection, treatment and distribution till August 31, when the present agreement expired. It v, as suggested that the council should accept full responsibility as from September 1.
The Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, said that he had asked Mr. A. Blake, investigating officer of the Milk Marketing Division, to visit Wanganui and look into the position locally. "I believe he did very efficient work, and that he has given the people confidence that their intersts are being looked into." Mr. Rogers added. Mr. Blake had agreed to visit Wanganui again on July 31, when he would attend a special meeting and explain the council’s powers and other details. "I feel that this is he best course to adopt as all arrangements for the present supply have been made,” said the Mayor. "Till we get settled in on this milk question it would be better for the council as a whole to deal with this matter, rather than set up a subcommitee."
"It is news that an agreement was made up to August 31.’’ said Cr. W. S. N. Rennie. "This council was never told about it,” The Mayor. That is true, out we had nothing to do with it. Cr. Rennie: This agreement is something we have got to abide by in the meantime.
Departmental officers had made it perfectly clear that the council had nothing to do with existing arrangements.
