TRANSPORT CENTRE FOR CITY
SUGGESTION TO COUNCIL. A suggestion that a transport centre for Wanganui should be devised was made at the lasi meeting of the City Council by Cr. A. R. Donaldson. In bringing the project forward Cr. Donaldson referred to the congestion which occurred at times in Ridgway Street, and Maria Place by the accumulation of taxis, and the arrival and departure of service cars. He thought that the utilisation of the premises formerly occupied by Hodson’s Service Cars Ltd., in St. Hill Street, would enable all taxi proprietors 1o have a central position, with telephone and office accommodation, and service cars to distant destinations could also have waiting rooms and other amenities. Cr. Donaldson suggested that before any expense was undertaken in alterations to the buildings, the various taxa and service car proprietors should be approached to ascertain whether the scheme was acceptable to them, andJf so what rent they would be prepared to pay. The! premises, which belong to the City Council, have been unoccupied for, some years, said Cr. Donaldson, and if! his suggestion resulted in the establishment of a transport centre, it would very possibly turn a liability into a payable proposition. The suggestion was referred to the Works Committee for a report.
